Unilever launches its new Sustainable Agriculture Code

Unilever has achieved a first for sustainable sourcing both for Unilever and the wider industry – its first-ever integrated Sustainable Agriculture Code (SAC).

It is the first time the rules and standards of Unilever’s sustainable agriculture practices have been documented in one place. Unlike codes developed by other companies, the SAC has a constructive and inclusive approach of working with suppliers to help Unilever deliver on its ambition of reducing its environmental impact – an important point of difference.

The Sustainable Agriculture Code defines Unilever’s expectations of our agricultural suppliers so that we commit to the sustainability journey together. This Code clearly lays out the minimum standards we expect suppliers to adopt and the wish for performance to improve over time. This is an important step for Unilever for the plan to ensure continued access to our key raw materials and ultimately buy all our raw materials from sustainable sources.

David Pendlington, Sustainable Agriculture Programme Co-ordinator, says that Unilever is the only company to have produced such a code. “It enables us to benchmark other standards out there that suppliers may be using – such as Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade – which has enabled us to reduce duplication and prevent our suppliers doing something twice.”

The aim is to help suppliers who have sound practices keep their costs to a minimum.
