Programme
The sustainable agricultural initiative came into being in the mid-1990s. Recognising that pressures on agriculture had implications for Unilever in the long term, we began working with others to develop the programme. We also started similar initiatives for water and fisheries in reponse to pressures on water resources and fish stocks.
The aim of the sustainable agriculture initiative is to ensure continued access for Unilever to the key agricultural raw materials, and ultimately to develop market mechanisms that allow consumers and customers to influence the sourcing of raw materials through their buying habits.
The objectives of the programme are laid down in the Mission statement.
A graphic timeline shows where we come from and where we are going to.
Advise on the overall approach and on the sustainable agriculture protocols is obtained from an international Advisory Board.
We have published three brochures on our Sustainable Agriculture programme, in 1997, in 2002 and in 2005.
